Hello Momstars! So since my last post where I quit my job, I have officially become a substitute teacher in NYC! It was a long process (took about a month) but I did it. I was notified that I have been approved to sub on February 2nd and had my first job on February 3rd!
Wanna talk about being nervous?!? I thought it would take some time to get my first job. I hadn’t had a different job in 10 years. Although I had worked with children for those years it was in a completely different capacity. As a CPS (Child Protection Specialist) you don’t get to spend as much time with the kids on your cases. As a teacher you are with them ALL day! Over time as a CPS you can build a rapport, with being a teacher that has to happen much sooner than later.
Ok so let me tell you about my day. I was subbing for pre K. I cant tell you how much I enjoyed myself. They were so cute and nice to me. LOL it sounds funny but let me tell you how nice they were really set the tone for the day. There were 13 students in class on that day. The classroom was so cool. There play centers that modeled areas or subjects of real life (home, kitchen, transportation etc). I also had a paraprofessional in the class to help me out. She was super sweet and helpful. I can see how paraprofessionals are needed in the classroom.
The teacher I covered for left out a very detailed schedule for the day with instructions. Arriving early helped me prepare for the day. On top of it all I had my best friend who is a teacher at the site help me throughout the day. This really gave me the confidence I needed. This experience has me thinking of going back to school to get certified in teaching. I really enjoyed the kids and seeing them absorb everything.
What I am getting the most out of this phase of my life right now is to NOT be scared to make a change in your life. You can start over anytime you want. Don’t put limits on yourself just because you are comfortable where you are. If you are comfortable where you are and are content in what ever your position is, then that’s great. But, to the ones who are comfortable but wish you could do something else and have ambition to be your own boss, change careers, go back to school etc DO IT! Don’t get stuck where you are. You CAN learn something new and be good at it, you can make a difference in someone else’s life but most importantly your own. Be HAPPY (not content) with your choices, whatever they may be.
Change is good y’all
